There have been many movies that have been based on video games. However, very few of those movies have had the very high level of anticipation that is attached to the new “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie that will be released by Paramount. Sonic is one of the most popular and iconic video game characters ever. Millions of Sonic games have been sold over the past 30 years. Therefore, it was only a matter of time until a movie starring the lovable blue speedster was released. Last year, Paramount unveiled the first trailer for the new Sonic movie that also has Jim Carrey playing the villain. However, the computer rendering of Sonic was trashed by fans. Therefore, Paramount was forced to go back to the drawing board and give Sonic a new look.
“Sonic the Hedgehog” will finally be released next weekend. The buzz around the new film is very good. In fact, industry experts are already projecting that Sonic will beat “Birds of Prey” and take over the #1 spot at the box office. Sonic will need to be a very big hit to make a profit. Therefore, this opening weekend is a lot more important to Sonic than it would be to less expensive movies.
Jim Carrey was interviewed recently to promote the release of Sonic. He was very candid regarding his thoughts about the character’s original design. He admitted that he had some serious concerns about it when he first saw what the character was going to look like. He said the reaction of the fans was very helpful. He feels that the redesign of the character will make the movie better. It is not clear why Sony did not simply show some early designs of the character to fans to get their feedback. This would have saved them the embarrassment of the original trailer being universally panned.
“Sonic the Hedgehog” is not going to have a lot of competition this weekend. That will make it much easier to attract audiences and make more money. It is very obvious that Paramount wants this movie to be the start of a very lucrative Sonic franchise. Only time will tell if that will be the case. At least the design of the title character has been corrected. Therefore, Sonic’s appearance will no longer be a reason that some people will avoid the movie. Paramount would he happy with a $50 million opening weekend.
