Marshmello isn’t the only performer from Ultra Miami 2018 that people are still talking about. The Chainsmokers’ Alex Pall and Drew Taggart obliterated any doubts from non-believers about their song genre as they moved the crowd relentlessly during their iconic set on Ultra Main Stage on Saturday. When it was time for their mega-hit, ‘Closer,’ they invited a very special guest to help sing the lyrics.
The Pinnacle of the Performance: Halsey Joins the Chainsmokers for ‘Closer’
After a crushing set, Halsey appeared to perform ‘Closer’ with The Chainsmokers as the EDM gods intended. The Chainsmokers remarked that they’d been waiting two years to perform the song live like this with Halsey on the main stage.
Drew made sure to hype the crowd for the singer’s appearance halfway through the song. Say what you want about the song’s lyrics, but the crowd of young dance music fans sang the song themselves with great enthusiasm. Halsey put the hook on repeat at the end of the song while the music positively thrashed behind her. What could sum up the Ultra weekend better than that?
The Chainsmokers aren’t newcomers to the Ultra Music Festival, but this was their first headlining performance at the festival. Refresh your memory on that performance with the video below.
The Chainsmokers were named no. 1 on the Billboard Dance 100 2018 list recently, evidence that they continue to deliver to fans both at shows and via sales and streaming services. In fact, The Chainsmokers also hit 1 billion streams on Spotify for the first time. They are one of only three artists to ever do so.
Ultra Miami 2018 celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, so big surprises were in order. The Chainsmokers took the opportunity to flex the skills that landed them on the main stage to begin with, as well as elevate their status with both new and old fans.
The Rest of the Iconic Chainsmokers Ultra 2018 Set
Along with The Chainsmokers bringing out Halsey for a live performance, The Chainsmokers wowed everyone within earshot with an intense set.
That helped rebuild the duo’s image with EDM purists who feel that The Chainsmokers have strayed from their dance roots. This chatter popped up shortly after the release of the last album, Memories…Do Not Open, and renewed with three new singles in 2018.
Both members of The Chainsmokers have always reinforced the idea that they make music for themselves, strive to wow fans with new and exciting performances, and want to keep evolving. They’ve never seemed troubled by accusations that they’ve turned their backs on or outgrown the EDM scene. Alex Pall once said, “…I think when you get complacent is when somebody else takes your spot,” a quote that sums up how the pair sees their artistic expression.
The set that rocked Ultra 2018 included six new songs in a set that mixed their commercial hits with hard dubstep and electro.
Shortly after they left the stage, The Chainsmokers tweeted:

A History with Halsey
Alex Pall once opened up to Interview Magazine about working with Halsey on the track they brought to fruition at Ultra 2018.
“She’s incredible. If you had asked us over the last year who was an artist that we wanted to work with, Halsey was number one on that list. She’s a very cool and unique artist. She has a very strong voice and she’s just very unapologetically her. That’s the kind of artist we like to work with. The song itself is something that Drew and our buddy wrote on our tour bus. We’re just very excited about it because it’s a huge step in the right direction for us as far as Drew singing and the song being produced by us, which is very uncommon nowadays in the music business. And obviously, coming off of songs like ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ and ‘Roses, I feel like it’s a good step from an identity standpoint.” – Alex Pall
