Depression is a problem that affects about 20 percent of adults. If you suffer from depression, then you will have an easier time controlling your symptoms if you follow a healthy diet. There was a study done that involved college students who suffered from depression.
The subjects followed a healthy diet for three weeks and noticed an improvement in their depression. They continued to follow a healthy diet for three months. Not only did the subjects notice an improvement in their symptoms, but it also helped improve people’s outlook on life.
Heather Francis is a neuropsychologist who works at Macquerie University in Australia. She is also the lead author of the study. She stated that cutting down on your processed food and increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables can greatly improve your symptoms.
The subjects in the study who ate the most fruits and vegetables also noticed the greatest improvement in their depression symptoms. People who did not change their diet did not notice an improvement in their symptoms. The average age of the subjects in the study was 19.
The subjects were asked to reduce their intake of refined carbohydrates, soft drinks, processed meats and sugar. They were also asked to get two to three servings of fruits, five servings of vegetables, three servings of protein and three servings of grains. They were also asked to eat fish up to three times per week.
Previous studies have shown that following a healthy diet can reduce depression symptoms. Studies have also shown that there is a link between processed food and depression. The Mediterranean diet has been shown to reduce the risk of depression.
Heather stated that you do not have to make major changes to your diet to get an improvement. Modest changes can have a major impact on your mental health.
