Elizabeth Warren is now famous as the woman who persisted. While that is certainly something to be proud of, there is a history of accomplishments behind her that have led to this point. Elizabeth Warren was a law professor at several universities, including Harvard, has won many awards, and is the author of eleven books.
Before she became the senator of Massachusetts, Warren was a scholar of bankruptcy law. She first began as a lecturer at Rutgers University in 1977. After a year there, she moved on to the University of Houston Law Center, then University of Texas School of Law. Eventually, in 1987, she became a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, followed by Harvard Law School. So far, she is the only tenured law professor at Harvard who earned her degrees through American public universities. She was also the school’s first professor to win the law school’s The Sacks–Freund Teaching Award twice. She was a highly respected law professor who published in many fields. Her focus was on commercial and bankruptcy law.
Elizabeth Warren was first elected to the senate in 2012, but she was publicly influential before that, even outside of law school. In 2009 The Boston Globe named her Bostonian of the Year. That same year, and in 2010 and 2015, Time Magazine listed her as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. She was on the list of Fifty Most Influential Women Attorneys in America numerous times.
During her time as a professor and a politician, Elizabeth Warren has also found time to pen eleven books. In 2004, she published The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers and Fathers Are Going Broke with her daughter, Amelia Tyagi. An updated version was published in 2016 called The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Parents Are (Still) Going Broke. The books point out that even with two incomes, and spending less on consumption expenses, core expenses like mortgages, health care, and child care are going up. At the same time, the inflation-adjusted income levels mean that American families are earning less. This puts a struggle on families that make the American dream difficult to achieve. Families are accruing more debt and saving less.
Warren’s books, like her politics and academic work, have focused on the finances of American families. In 2017, she published the book This Fight Is Our Fight: The Battle to Save America’s Middle Class. This title asserts that the federal government should do more to help American families, by way of social programs and better investments in education.
Even with all these accomplishments behind her, still Elizabeth Warren persists. In February 2019 she announced that she will run for President of the United States in 2020.
