Fans of the horror television series Supernatural are celebrating following news that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is set to return to the show. Morgan played John Winchester, Sam and Dean’s father, in the first two seasons of the series. Appearing in a total of 12 episodes, Morgan’s character was the focus of much of the show’s first season as Sam and Dean traveled across America’s back roads in search of their wayward father. John sacrificed himself for Dean in the season two opener, last appearing as a ghost in the show’s 2007 season finale. Despite Morgan’s absence, a younger version of John appeared in several flashback episodes played by actor Matt Cohen.

Morgan will return for the show’s 300th episode. Entitled “Lebanon,” the episode is set to air on February 7, 2019. Andrew Dabb, the executive producer of Supernatural, said that the creative team behind the show is thrilled to have Morgan once again a part of the series. Dabb elaborated that the show is planning something special for Morgan’s character, also teasing the return of several other prominent past characters. While some might be incredulous that a long dead character could return, Supernatural has proven time and again that death is no obstacle to the show’s greater storyline. The show’s main characters, Sam, Dean, and Castiel, have all died on several occasions and still found a way back to the land of the living. Most recently, the show brought back Jim Beaver’s Bobby Singer and Samantha Smith’s Mary Winchester. Bobby died in season seven while Mary died in a flashback sequence all the way back in Supernatural’s pilot episode.

Despite long dead characters returning, fans always saw the chance of Morgan reprising his role to be slim. After appearing on Supernatural, Morgan became a big name in Hollywood, first starring in Grey’s Anatomy and then playing the villainous Negan on AMC’s The Walking Dead. Morgan stirred fan interest for a possible return to Supernatural last month. When a fan tweeted the actor asking if he would be interested in reprising the role of John, Morgan replied that he would gladly rejoin the show if the story was appropriate.

Supernatural is set to air its midseason finale this week. The show will return for its winter run on January 17, 2019.
