The first details on Nickelodeon’s upcoming revival of the classic horror anthology series Are You Afraid of the Dark? have been revealed by Deadline Hollywood. The entertainment news website announced the cast and plot of the revival earlier this week. The cast includes Best.Worst.Weekend.Ever actor Sam Ashe Arnold, Artemis Fowler actress Tamara Strong, Lyliana Wray of Black-ish, IT’s Jeremy Taylor, Miya Cech of Rim of the World, and Blindspotting actor Rafael Casal. The miniseries will be divided into three one-hour parts that will be written by Ben David Grabinski and directed by Dean Israelite.
Deadline also revealed the plot synopsis of the revival. Like the original series, the new Are You Afraid of the Dark? will focus on the Midnight Society, a group of teens who tell scary stories by a campfire. The revival’s tale will focus on the Carnival of Doom and its ringmaster, Mr. Tophat, who will be played by Casal. The teens get more than they bargained for when characters and events from the story begin to come to life with drastic results. The new series does not currently have a release date but is expected to premiere on the kid’s network sometime in the month of October.
The original Are You Afraid of the Dark? was a mainstay of 90s Nickelodeon. Running for 91 episodes over the course of seven seasons, the series was among the first acting jobs for many of today’s most well-known Hollywood celebrities, including Emily VanCamp, Neve Campbell, Ryan Gosling, and Hayden Christensen. Although a kid’s show, Are You Afraid of the Dark? had some truly frightening episodes, notably the Nosferatu-inspired “The Tale of the Midnight Madness.” Renewed interest in the series from airings on NickRewind inspired executives to move forward with the miniseries revival. A feature film based on Are You Afraid of the Dark? was also slated to be released on October 11 of this year but was pushed back to an unspecified date following production problems.
