Rebel Wilson Stars in New Rom Com

Australian actress Rebel Wilson is set to star in the film “Isn’t It Romantic,” in theaters starting on Valentine’s Day of next year. The movie is a romantic comedy that takes a funny look at the world of romantic comedies and the perfect world they portray.

Rebel Wilson’s character is somewhat of a cynic when it comes to love. She’s been told from a young age that she isn’t the type of girl to have a perfect love story. Her life is quite average and she’s not a girl men swoon over or beg to get her phone number while in line at the coffee shop.

Her life is turned upside down when she suffers a head injury during a mugging in the subway. When she awakens, she finds herself in a totally different world where everything is ideal for the perfect love story. With an apartment full of high-heel stilettos and a new perfectly pressed wardrobe, Rebel Wilson’s character now has the men taking notice.

Although she’s living in a fairytale world, Rebel Wilson’s character isn’t enthused with her new life. It’s a bit too sappy and perfect for her liking. She seeks a way to get back to her normal life, and to do so, she must make a man fall in love with her.

Rebel Wilson comedy

“Isn’t It Romantic” puts Rebel Wilson in a role she’s quite familiar with. The 38-year-old actress has been in hit comedies like “Bridesmaids,” “What To Expect When You’re Expecting” and “Pitch Perfect.”

No matter the movie, Rebel Wilson is generally there to provide comedic relief with her snappy one-liners, brilliantly delivered and sometimes even improvised. Wilson’s comedy is often sarcastic, so putting her in a role that pokes a bit of fun at traditional romantic comedies is a good fit for her.

Throughout the film, Rebel Wilson fights the ideals of the perfect rom-com world. To add to the comedy, the rom-com she’s trapped in is PG-13 so all curse words are bleeped out and risqué moments are edited out, which leads to some funny moments of Wilson trying desperately to get intimate with her love interest Blake, played by the hunky Liam Hemsworth. From the trailer and reviews, it sounds like the most you’ll see is a shirtless Hemsworth, but it doesn’t keep Wilson’s character from trying to make the sparks fly between them.

For those big romantic comedy fans out there, they can enjoy some nice nods to great films like “Notting Hill” and “When Harry Met Sally.”

If you look at Rebel Wilson’s personal history, it’s sort of a surprise she’s known as the funny lady in movies such as this. The actress holds a law degree from University of New South Wales.

Rebel Wilson no longer a sidekick

It’s the epitome of an acting career to be the star or main character of a movie. In her previous hits, Rebel Wilson has been cast in supporting roles to be the comedic relief. “Isn’t It Romantic” puts Wilson as the lead character for the first time in her career.

Wilson’s character had been seeking to get noticed at her job as an architect in New York but finds herself delivering the office bagels and coffee instead of making it big. In the end, this romantic comedy isn’t so much about falling in love with other people though. This funny tale shows Rebel Wilson’s character that you should love yourself no matter what.

The starring role is a great accomplishment for the actress, who only started her United States acting career in 2011 following some roles on television in Australia from 2002 to 2010.

Beyond it being a great accomplishment though, Wilson shared that she really enjoyed filming the movie. “I had such a ball filming that,” she said in a recent interview.

A refreshing rom-com spin

The film might be the perfect romantic comedy for Valentine’s Day if you’re tired of seeing the same film over and over again where the guy and the girl get placed in the funny romantic situations. Instead, this film has some fun with those classic situations and adds comedy to them.

Rebel Wilson’s character sports some classic pastels and ultra-feminine outfits as she takes the stage again with actor Adam DeVine, who was also in the movie “Pitch Perfect.” But instead of promoting and thriving on this perfection, Wilson’s character seems disenchanted with it.

And her apartment, it’s perfection as well with a walk-in closet the size of some people’s entire New York apartment. All the furnishings match and feature more pastels with stunning natural light and views of the city. Instead of being excited about the change to her living situation, the trailer shows Wilson calling the police to alert them to the fact that something isn’t right because it isn’t the place she called home before her head injury.

To add to the hilarity of the spoof on romantic comedies, the cast will burst into song at random times because that tends to happen in other movies, despite the lack of random singing in real love stories entail. In addition to the singing, the characters bust out in some great dance numbers, because doesn’t every date you’ve ever been on include a spontaneous dance through the streets?

A Valentine’s Day hit?

Only time will tell whether or not the movie takes off, but given the setting of the movie, your husband, boyfriend, brother or guy friend might not mind going to the theater with you to watch this one to simply enjoy the comedy. Though who knows, once we see how silly some rom-com moments are, it might make us all wonder why we spend our time watching this movie genre.

Regardless of the outcome at theaters, seeing Rebel Wilson in a leading role in a romantic comedy will be interesting to watch and everyone is hoping this film is as funny as the trailer portrays it to be.
