Kevin Smith Addresses Jon Cryer’s Casting as Lex Luthor on Supergirl

Director and renowned comic book writer Kevin Smith recently spoke about the casting of Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor on The CW superhero show Supergirl. Fans of the series were slightly taken aback when Cryer’s casting was announced last month as the actor is best known for his comedic roles, including parts in Two and a Half Men and Pretty in Pink. Addressing Cryer’s casting on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, Smith said fans have little to worry about with a funny Lex. Smith told co-host Ralph Garman that he knew Supergirl producers were going to cast Cryer far in advance of the news being made public. Smith promised listeners that Cryer’s portrayal of the iconic villain would not be humorous but would be a “dark turn” for the series. While not revealing too much plot details, Smith described the Lex storyline as “really cool.” Referencing Cryer’s role from Pretty in Pink, Smith joked “This is going to be like when Duckie went bad.”

Supergirl embracing a dark storyline for Lex should come as no surprise for those who have been keeping up with the series. After emerging triumphant in her battle with Reign and the Worldkillers last season, Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl/Kara Danvers has faced an unexpected challenge this season in the form of the anti-alien hate group the Children of Liberty. Led by the enigmatic Agent Liberty, the group has been committing hate crimes against aliens as they push for a human-first agenda. Meanwhile, Supergirl is facing a challenge of a new making as she contends with Colonel Haley, the new leader of the Department of Extra-Normal Operations who seemingly harbors anti-alien sentiments. Most shocking of all, Supergirl’s best friend and Lex’s half-sister, Lena Luthor, has been pushing an experimental treatment that gives regular human beings special abilities to combat aliens. Most fans theorize that Lena’s experiments and concerns about the increasing hate crimes in the country will lead to Lex’s introduction to the series.

Supergirl airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. Cryer’s first appearance as Lex on the series will take place on the fifteenth episode of the season, airing sometime in early 2019.
