Internationally renowned educator and master plastic surgeon from Dallas, Dr. Rod J. Rohrich, holds a Fireside Chat during which he shares secrets of life-long success along with his passion and focus on becoming the best in his field of expertise:
Halifax, Canada – Dallas-based plastic surgeon, Dr. Rod J. Rohrich, attended the Dr. Donald H. Lalonde Plastic Surgery Education Day that took place on June 1 – 3 at Dalhousie University. As part of the event, he participated in a unique Fireside Chat alongside noted Canada-based Dr. Don Lalonde. During the chat, titled “Life Lessons, Plastic Surgery Pearls and Other Wisdom,” Dr. Rohrich addressed questions by current as well as future plastic surgeons. Attendees inquired about topics such as the importance of staying focused in life as well as how to continue to love their profession in order to be the best they can be each day. The most notable topic that was addressed was how to become a consistently excellent surgeon of any kind.
“If you love what you do each day, your job as a doctor or plastic surgeon is not a job at all but a true honor and privilege,” Dr. Rohrich stated. Rohrich also highlighted to his plastic surgery colleagues to remember that they are physicians, first and foremost, and as such they ought to give back to their patients, their communities and ultimately to medicine. Rohrich also stated that “Becoming consistent requires that we all become students of the repetitive processes that work in what we do so we can improve patient care, patient safety and outcomes.” The Dallas-based surgeon stated that an example of this is the process of becoming an expert in rhinoplasty and facial rejuvenation. He elaborated that the key to that are the three Es, namely developing experience, expertise and producing reproducible excellent results. “Be a patient advocate first and foremost,” he advised the attendees.
When asked by Dr. Lalonde about what drives him, Dr. Rohrich replied, “It is passion and focus that neither stems from your mind or from your hands but from you heart that makes you great and innovative in all that you do each day.” Rohrich focuses on doing three key things each day to make his patients’ lives better and as such serves as an example for others to do the same. He firmly believes in leading by example by his actions rather than his words.
In addition to the Fireside Chat, Dr. Rohrich gave educational talks on filler safety, the role of fat compartments in facial rejuvenation, strategies on developing consistency in rhinoplasty, the role of the neck in face/neck lifting as well as a real world perspective on being a physician. Rohrich also gave a cadaver demonstration on open rhinoplasty
Dr. Rohrich believes that specialized educational symposia are key components of a modern plastic surgeons’ continuing medical education. As such, he is chair of the world renowned Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium. He explains that “The Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposia are designed to provide access to information and advances that are truly on the forefront of surgical knowledge in this specialized area.” “Rhinoplasty is the quintessential representation of plastic surgery as a whole. It remains one of the most difficult procedures in all of plastic surgery, one of great finesse which takes years to master.”
