Dr. Mark Holterman is a practitioner, educator, and researcher. He is a professor at the University of Illinois as well as CEO of Mariam Global Health. The majority of his time is spent helping his patients in any way that he can, and he contributes to many charitable organizations including the International Pediatric Specialists Alliance for the Children of Vietnam or IPSAC-VN.
IPSAC-VN helps those in the Vietnamese medical community increase their ability to offer surgical services to the children, and it does this by accepting money from donors and help from volunteers.
The volunteers are an integral part of this organization because they are providing care for the patients and performing surgery at Vietnamese hospitals, but they are also lecturing and training medical personnel at Vietnamese medical schools. To be a volunteer, each person must obtain a visa and passport that will be valid at least six months after the day that they leave on their trips. Volunteers are also required to present the organization with copies of their medical licenses and CVs.
When the IPSAC-VN accepts an individual, the organization suggests that he or she invest in a good travel medical insurance. They also advise volunteers to book their trips to the location two days before they have to report for duty. The team will be debriefed before their duties begin and also after they have completed their assignments. After they arrive in Vietnam, they will be responsible for their lodgings, travel expenses and all other costs.
Dr. Mark Holterman’s Beginnings
Dr. Mark Holterman got his start in business on a farm in Wisconsin. He helped his father run his construction business and learned all about the challenges and rewards that go along with owning your own business along the way. He was surprised to be accepted at Yale University, and he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1980 with honors.
After his graduation, he received an NIH scholarship in the Medical Scientist Training Program and started a combination M.D. and Ph.D. program at the University of Virginia. After 13 years in Charlottesville, Dr. Holterman had his degrees under his belt and completed his general surgery residency, but he also married Aixuan who was a surgeon and a scientist, and they eventually had two boys. Also at this time, he completed a fellowship in pediatric surgery at the Children’s Hospital and Medical Center.
Dr. Mark Holterman diligently continued his education over the years. In order to do so, he and his family moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1993. There, Dr. Holterman received fellowship training in pediatric surgery at Seattle Children’s Hospital (AliveNewspaper). During this time, the Holtermans had a third son, and they were on the move yet again for more training. This time, Dr. Holterman’s wife would be receiving the training in Montreal.
Dr. Mark Holterman spent his time in Montreal taking care or his three sons, and he returned to his career after his wife completed her training. This time, the family ended up in Illinois at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1997. Now that the children are grown, the Holtermans are retiring from the University with full tenure to become enmeshed in biotechnology developments. They also hope to encourage advanced medical education all over the world.
Dr. Mark Holterman is an attending pediatric surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Illinois, St. Francis Medical Center and the Advocate Christ Children’s Hospital. Previously, Dr. Holterman served as the surgeon-in-chief at this hospital. He was also an attending pediatric surgeon at Rush University Medical Center, and he is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons as well.
Mariam Global Health
Dr. Mark Holterman founded Mariam Global Health in 2012 and is the CEO of this company. He started it so that he could give his innovative friends a vehicle with which to develop their life-changing ideas on healthcare issues. The goal of Mariam Global Health is to search for impact investors. To Dr. Mark Holterman, impact investors are those who would like to do good things with their money, and just one of those things is advancing global healthcare.
The impact innovators are the other part of the equation. These are the scientists and physicians that Dr. Holterman knows who have created the transformative technology that has the potential to dramatically reform healthcare. Impact innovators have something in common. They do not know that much about business, and they also may be unfamiliar with the ways that they can raise money. So, they don’t know how to turn their ideas into plans that they can take to the marketplace. Therefore, their dreams never see the light of day.
Dr. Mark Holterman hopes to change that by implementing a baseball analogy. He describes his search for impact innovators as a talent scout who is looking for his next million dollar player. The second step is the step that the minor league coach takes. This coach teaches the player how he can get into the major leagues, and this is equivalent to developing a business and obtaining the financing for the venture.
The next step is for the business agent who makes sure that the player gets everything that he deserves. At this point, the company is ensuring that the impact innovator receives the most money possible for his or her technology.
Mariam Global Health has global connections that allow it to recruit impact innovators who are currently outside of the country. The company also gathers global assistants for the purpose of participating in clinical trials. The company also nurtures technology development and product distribution.
Dr. Mark Holterman has found that the rest of the world is ready for biotechnology, and it would make a tremendous impact both financially and socially. Unfortunately, many people see his strategy as extremely risky. Dr. Holterman’s company does its best to reduce the risk, but it also speculates on the technology that has the greatest potential to cure the most people and also give the company a good return on the investment.
With Dr. Mark Holterman in charge, science and business are partners at Mariam Global Health. For more information on Dr. Mark Holterman and Mariam Gobal Health, visit http://mariamglobal.com/
