A number of young American citizens together with their family members have taken to the White House to demand more stringent legislation on gun control. This happens less than a week after a violent shooting in a Florida high school which led to the death of 17 people. The protestors who would amount to about 50 people held posters and signs that said that enough is enough while others argued that the White House should press for gun control legislation or the American people would change the members of Congress in the forthcoming mid-term elections scheduled for November this year. The protests were held at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC.
The rally comes at a critical time when activists and other human rights moderators have called on President of the United States Donald trump and the Us Congress to strengthen gun control legislation in the wake of what has been termed by many as the worst mass shooting the history of America. On Wednesday, a gunman opened fire on the teachers and students at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida on Wednesday which led to 17 people losing their lives. Reporters from different media houses have made said that the protestors outside the White House were reading out loud the names of the victims of gun violence in learning institutions in the United States since 1999.
Alan Fisher, a reporter for Al Jazeera said that the protestors had camped outside the official residence of the US president to make a very strong statement that enough is enough. The reporter added that the protestors argued that it was the responsibility of the US government to pass legislation that ensured the safety of the American while there are in learning institutions. The protestors said that it had come had ultimately come when if changing gun control legislation was what was needed to keep Americans safe, then it had to be done and be done fast.
American officials led by President Donald Trump have been under pressure to cut their long-term ties with the National Rifle Association (NRA). The NRA is one of the most powerful lobbying group for gun control both in the United States and the world over. Most Americans had laid the blame on the association for perpetuating the unwillingness by US legislators to pass laws on gun control in the US while at the same time upholding the second amendment. One of the signs wrote that NRA should stop the murder of American children.
