Can a degree focused on communications and television give reality TV contestants an edge? When this athletic Academy of Art University grad pursued her degree in multimedia communications and broadcast television, no one imagined that she would pursue love and showcase her talents before a national audience. Academy of Art University alumnus Kendall Long is one of the Season 22 contestants on the popular ABC reality series The Bachelor.
Natives of Valencia, California, both Kendall and her sister Kylie both attended the university from 2010 to 2014, and Kendall received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Academy of Art University’s School of Communications and Media Technologies, focusing on multimedia communications, emphasizing on-camera talent and producing. Since her graduation, this budding reality television star has carved out her own niche as a consummate professional in the entertainment industry.
A Driving Persona
Kendall Long was a three-sport athlete in high school, excelling in soccer, cross country, and track. During their collegiate career, Kendall and her sister Kylie both represented Academy of Art U’s Urban Knights in track and field, where Kendall achieved the top award in program history for the 600 yard run in 2012. Kendall also achieved her personal best of 25:41 on a 5k running course in 2010, and finished 86th at the San Francisco Invitational on September fourth of that same year. She remains quite adventurous according to some items on her bucket list: scuba diving by a shipwreck, hanging out with pigs in the Bahamas, and heading to a hedgehog cafe in Japan.
From the beginning, Kendall knew she wanted to work in the media industry and sought ways to become involved as early as possible. Between classes at university, Kendall worked as a production assistant, videographer, photographer, and film correspondent, as well as being a student representative of the university communications department. Nicolette Bathea, one of Kendall’s supervisors, shared, “One key word stands out when working with Kendall: positivity. She’s capable, adaptable, and always up for getting the job done. She’s eager, has a passion for creativity, and a great can-do attitude that is wonderful to be around.”
A Formidable Bachelorette
With that kind of background and independent spirit, she may prove to be a formidable contestant. Kendall, age 26, is one of 29 ladies vying for real estate mogul and race car driver Arie Luyendyk, Jr.’s heart. But will he measure up? Kendall has previously pointed out that her dream man should possess a physique that would “give him an edge in surviving a zombie apocalypse.” Luyendyk, age 36, was a suitor in a previous season of The Bachelorette and garnered much surprise when he was announced as the season 22 star of The Bachelor.
The first show episode aired on January first, and viewers were introduced to Kendall, who claims to have never had a relationship last over a year. Her YouTube channel boasts videos of her playing the ukulele and she admitted on the show to an interest in taxidermy. Among her rivals are 4 women named Lauren, a nanny, a waitress, several real estate associates, two business owners, a sports reporter, a nurse, a television host, a fitness coach, a salesperson, a personal stylist, a photographer, and a physical therapist.
Kendall has capitalized on her education and experience from Academy of Art University to become the current creative director for the Beverly Hills-based company WhoHaha. Her responsibilities there include fabricating props, designing sets for various shows, purchasing necessary materials and props, and providing ongoing direction to the art department. Her professional credits feature contributions to the set decor, furnishings, and other on-set art choices for the 10-year anniversary special of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Other credits include work on MTV’s Ridiculousness, Escape the Living Dead, TLC’s Dare to Wear, and Food Network’s Mystery Diners.
