‘Star Wars’ is easily one of the most diverse, in-depth, and fascinating universes in all of fiction. ‘Star Wars’ is as deep as it is wide with thousands of characters spanning every medium on Earth. It is, perhaps, credit to the ‘Star Wars’ fandom that they can take even the smallest of characters and turn them into a star. The original Boba Fett, who famously did nothing but wear cool armor, turned into a sensation. Now fans are looking at Captain Phasma, a single-line villain from ‘The Force Awakens’, to see if the character ban buck the trend of being fascinating without having substance.
Captain Phasma is played by ‘Game of Thrones’ star Gwendoline Christie. Known for her height and intimidating presence, Christie is an absolute force when on screen. In ‘Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens’ Christie’s Captain Phasma is set up to be a foil to the character Finn. Finn, played by John Boyega, is a former Empire Stormtrooper who joined the rebel alliance after meeting Oscar Isaac’s character, Poe. We say all of that to say this, Captain Phasma is looking to get a much bigger chance to shine in ‘The Last Jedi’ and as super fans of iconic looking characters, we couldn’t be happier.
Captain Phasma was given precious little to do in the first film of the new trilogy but the latest ‘Last Jedi’ trailer showcases Christie in full battle gear, going head to head with a very sweaty Finn. Phasma’s resurgence in the story can be attributed to the addition of Rian Johnson as a writer for ‘The Last Jedi’. In ‘The Force Awakens’ writer Lawrence Kasdan literally threw the character away and we last see her tossed in a trash compactor. WIth the narrative dichotomy going on between Finn’s turn to good and Phasma’s continued descent into evil, we are promised what should be a rewarding and villainous character arc.
The problem with Boba Fett was that he was a character that gained cult status simply for existing. He did nothing before dying outside of wearing some cool armor. Fett is eventually killed off in one of the latest culmination in character-arc history as a half-blind Han Solo breaks the character’s jetpack and sends him tumbling to his death. Captain Phasma is a second chance to breathe life into secondary characters for the ‘Star Wars’ universe and we hope the creative team is ready, and willing, to take it.
