Sandra Bullock is among the first Hollywood A-listers to come to the aid of victims struggling to survive the effects of Hurricane Harvey. She has pledged to give $1 million to help recovery efforts in the Houston, Texas area, following the devastation wrought by the tropical storm. The donation is being made through the American Red Cross, who will determine where the funds are most needed along the Gulf of Mexico coastline.
Sandra Bullock Donates Aid To Hurricane Victims
There’s no denying Sandra Bullock has strong connections to the area. She owns a home in Austin, Texas, so her feeling of community for the people of Texas is genuine, but her statements about the donation suggest she might have made the donation no matter where the devastation occurred.
“I’m just grateful I can do it,” said Ms. Bullock. “We have to take care of one another.”
Sandra went on to say that she hopes Hurricane Harvey can affect America in a positive way by bringing our divided society together. As someone who has often jumped in to help whenever catastrophe has struck, Sandra sees this as an opportunity to bond and put differences aside.
“There are no politics in eight feet of water,” Sandra Bullock said.
She is, of course, referring to the flooding that has chased people from their homes throughout Texas and continues to advance, as rain remains heavy in some areas. While Hurricane Harvey has been downgraded to a tropical storm, it has still had a severe impact on Texas communities, killing 19 people and causing over $3 billion in damages. The area is expected to receive an additional 39 inches of rain over the next few days.
Hollywood To The Rescue!
The Walt Disney Company has donated $1 million dollars via The Red Cross as well and Facebook is pledging to match donations made through the social media site up to $1 million.
Other celebrities, such as Dwayne Johnson, Kim Kardashian West, Lin-Manuel Miranda, DJ Khaled, and Nicki Minaj have all made donations to aid in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Comic Kevin Hart launched a Hurricane Harvey Relief Challenge, which asks celebrities to donate $25,000 per person to help Texas residents put out of their homes by the flooding. Celebrities, politicians, and business owners are all coming together to help provide relief in what has been called the worst storm to hit the Houston, Texas area in recorded history.
