Jay Cutler took the field on Thursday, August 17, 2017, for the first time in a Miami uniform. The Dolphins went head to head with the Baltimore Ravens for the second preseason game. 11 days earlier, quarter back Ryan Tannehill sustained a season ending knee injury on August 3, 2017. The team reached out to Cutler who was released by the Bears on March 9, 2017. Cutler announced his retirement in May of 2017, and was hired by fox to be a commentator.

Adam Gase (Dolphin’s head coach) persuaded Cutler to disregard his retirement plans and join the Dolphins. Cutler abandoned his retirement plans and signed a one year $10 million contract with the Dolphins. Gase made a statement that hiring Cutler would be a fresh start. Cutler started the game by making three of six passes for 24 yards. He also used his skills on a previous play where he raced to the right to avoid pressure and executed a 31 yard back shoulder completion to DeVante Parker. The play was called back due to a holding penalty on Tackle Sam Young.

Cutler had made his statement by then. Gase, who was also the former offensive coordinator for the Bears, stated that he was successful while working with Cutler throughout the years as offensive coordinator in 2015. After Tannehill’s post season injury, he further damaged his ACL during training camp earlier in the month, and Jay Cutler became the back up plan for the Dolphins.

On Thursday, Gase became emotional during an interview after discussing the doctor’s office visit after Tannehill’s injury. Tannehill stated that he felt as if he had let the team down. Gase told reporters that if Cutler started getting hit hard he was taking him out of the game. Cutler ended up taking a hit from the Raven’s linebacker Za’Darius Smith on a third and eleven with 7:55 left in the first quarter. The Dolphins got the ball back with 5:40 left in the first quarter and Matt Moore became the new quarter back. Gase stated that the Dolphin’s offense will depend on Cutlers return. Gase told reporters that he and Cutler are comfortable together and he is confident that the arrangement that he made with Cutler will be a great one. The head coach was worried about last nights 31-7 loss to the Ravens and is unsure about the upcoming season in 2017.
